William Francis Hegner

Appleton

Age 86, died Wednesday April 11, 2001 at Colony Oaks Care Center. He was born on April 10, 1915 to the late Dr. George T. and Florence (O’Brien) Hegner in Appleton. Bill attended St. Mary’s grade school and Appleton Senior High School, graduating in 1932. From 1932 through 1936 he attended Marquette University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and then a law degree in 1938. While at Marquette he was a member of the track and golf teams. After graduating from Marquette he served as the Chairman of the Outagamie County infantile paralysis drive for the war effort and served as an air raid warden.
In addition to raising four children with his wife, Jane, he practiced law for 45 years in Appleton, retiring in 1983. As a child he enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Bill also enjoyed playing golf, attending and participating in sports events with his children and grandchildren.
He also was active in the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus serving as the deputy grand knight of the order.
In the early 1980’s he was awarded the Juris Doctorate degree and in 1995 was honored by the Outagamie County Bar Association for his tenure in 1961 as the President of the Wisconsin State Bar Association.
He is survived by four children and their families, George, Linda and Drew Hegner of Black Creek; Grant and Pam Hegner of Omaha, Nebraska; Margaret Bullock and Jim Griffith of Helena, Montana; Robert Hegner of Milwaukee; John and Jennifer Hegner of Appleton; Jennifer and Matt Hedden of Kimberly; and Jim, Kim and Ted Hegner of Sterling, Illinois.
According to his wishes, Mr. Hegner’s remains have been cremated. A Memorial Service will be 3:30 PM, Friday April 13, 2001 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME with Fr, Michael O’Rourke officiating. Visitation will be FRIDAY from 2:30 PM until the time of service.
The family requests that any contributions be given to their local Alzheimer’s Association.
