Verna F. Schlemme

February 29, 1924 — May 31, 2014

Verna (Nassen) Schlemme was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 31, 2014, with her family at her side. Verna was born February 29, 1924 to the late Henry and Alvina (Krueger) Nassen in Tenhassen Township, Minnesota. There, she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Verna graduated from Fairmont High School in 1942, and married Alvin Schlemme in Wichita Falls, Texas, that same year. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton and its Ladies Aid since 1962. Verna enjoyed flowers, sewing, going to rummage sales, playing cards, and especially spending time with all of her grandchildren. She was lovingly known as “Mom” to many of the neighborhood kids.

Verna is survived by her three children: Vicky (Harlowe) Rowe, Linda (Glen) Zimmerman, and Michael (Beth) Schlemme; her grandchildren: Lisa O'Neill, Harlowe (Annette) Rowe, Jennifer (Jeff) Ehren, Shayne (Matthew) Clausen, Christopher (Laura) Zimmerman, Taylor (Evan) Pistohl, Zachary McAuley, and Dylan (special friend Adriana) McAuley; her great grandchildren: Joshua O'Neill, Joey O'Neill, Harlowe R. Rowe, Austin Zimmerman, Elliana Zimmerman, Reagan Clausen, and Dane Clausen. She is also survived by a sister: Bernice Nolte; a nephew: Ronald (Marsha) Nolte; and nieces: Nancy (Ken) Mielke, Patricia Nolte, and Debra (Randy) Esch. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin; her parents, a sister: Leona (Herb) Brock, a brother-in-law: Rueben Nolte; nieces: Yvonne Brock and Sandra Brock; and a great-granddaughter: Isabella Zimmerman.

A Christian Memorial Service for Verna will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 6, 2014 at ST. PAUL EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 N. Morrison Street in Appleton, with Rev. Kenneth Frey officiating. Inurnment will be at Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established for St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church.

The family would like to thank Beth DuChateau and Theda Care At Home Hospice, as well as our nurse practitioner Lisa Gunderson for all of their care, concern, and attention during the past few weeks. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” John 11:25.
