Spencer R. Payne

March 9, 1927 — August 9, 2009

Spencer R. Payne, 82, was called into the waiting arms of the Lord on Sunday morning, August 9, 2009. He was born March 9, 1927 in Neenah, the son of Spencer and Viola (Kehl) Payne, and grandson of German immigrants August and Theresa Kehl, who were among the first Germans to arrive in Neenah. Along with other early German settlers, they founded Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church there. Spencer was a 1949 graduate of Lawrence University, and for over forty years worked as a research physicist for the James River Corporation. He served his country during the Korean War at the Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland, a high-security governmental research facility. On May 29, 1954, he married the former Jeanne Fandrey at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Neenah; she survives. Spencer was an avid20gardener and enjoyed sports and outdoor activities of all kinds. Over the years, he had been a faithful member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Neenah, and more recently of Eternal Love Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton. He regularly attended bible study and was also a supporter of Fox Valley Lutheran High School.

Survivors include his wife: Jeanne Payne of Appleton; three children: David (Joyce) Payne of Appleton, Laura (Mike) Hermans of Neenah, and Daniel (Lenora) Payne of Canyon Country, California; five grandchildren: Matthew (Sarah) Payne of Waseca, Minnesota; Cassandra Payne of Kimberly; Timothy (Jessica) Payne of Bangor, Wisconsin; Christianna Payne of Wautoma; and Keith (Sarah) Delaney of California; three great-grandchildren: Joshua Spencer Payne, Abigail Delaney, and Thomas Delaney; three brothers and a sister: Robe rt (Pat) Payne of Neenah; Richard (Mary) Payne of Menasha; Don (Eva) Payne of Freedom; and Shirley (Don) Dahl of Menasha; a sister-in-law: Sally Payne of Appleton; and a brother-in-law: Rollie Kramer of Neenah. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gordon, and sisters-in-law Joan Kramer and Jackie Germaine.

The Christian Funeral for Spencer will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at ETERNAL LOVE EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1011 E. Midway Road in Appleton, with Rev. Robert Balza officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Neenah. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and again at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service.
