Age 50, passed away surrounded by her loving family at Appleton Medical Center on Wednesday, February 25, 2009. She was born in Appleton on March 18, 1958, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Smits. On July 25, 1980 she married her husband of 28 years, Richard Bast. Sandy graduated from Kimberly High School in 1976 and attended Fox Valley Technical College earning a degree in CIS/Programmer/Analyst. She was talented with computers and very creative, making beautiful art in all mediums including: watercolors, inks, oils, and oil pastels. Sandy will be remembered for her love of making art and crafts. She loved to travel with Dick to the warmer climates and walking on the beaches.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Dick; mother, Elizabeth Smits of Combined Locks; sister, Kristie Smits of Appleton; brother, Jim Smits of Combined Locks; mother and father-in-law, Leroy and Betty Bast; brothers-in-law: Ronald Bast, William (special friend, Kay) Bast, Robert Bast, Joseph (Diane) Bast, Brian (Mary) Bast and Jeff (Karen) Bast; and sister-in-law, Susan (Roger) Jones. She is preceded in death by her father, John Smits; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

The funeral liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at ST. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 Wallace St., Combined Locks, with Fr. Jim Lucas officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Appleton Medical Center for their wonderful care. Further, a special thank you to Sandy's best friend, Kathy Erm, for being there for Sandy and Dick.

A memorial fund in Sandy's name is being established.
