Salvatore F. Porto

Salvatore “Sam” Francis Porto, age 87, went to heaven on March 11, 2012 at Cherry Meadows Hospice with his family at his side. Sam was born December 31, 1924 in Menasha, son of the late Salvatore and Concetta (Porto) Porto. Sam served in World War II, both the Navy and Army. By trade he was a machinist for over thirty-five years. He was an avid outdoorsman, archer, and gardener. He loved woodworking, trips to the casino and helping his children with odd jobs at their homes. On March 20, 1970, he married Mary Ann (Hinkens) Vander Wielen.

Survivors include his loving wife: Mary Ann;

Sam also leaves behind eight children:

Sara Porto of Kaukauna and her daughter Mollie Snodgrass;

Sam Porto of Kimberly;

Paula Vander Wielen of Appleton and her daughters Nicole Vander Wielen and Starr Cowling;

Alan (Barb McEwen) Vander Wielen of Hazelhurst and their children Lynn (Alexander) Enurah and Beth Vander Wielen;

Linda (Eddy) Hofacker-Mongin of Appleton and their daughters Althea (Todd) Vanevenhoven and Emilie Hofacker;

Tim Vander Wielen of Fish Creek;

Jill (Mike) Vander Zanden of Iola;

Jay (Lynn) Vander Wielen of Shiocton and their sons Jason Vander Wielen and Brett Vander Wielen;

There are also three great-grandchildren: Allison and Trey Vanevenhoven and Niara Butts; many nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law: Gordon “Butch” (Joyce) Hinkens of Kimberly and Harold (Mary Ellen) Hinkens of Muskego.

Services for Sam will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the Jansen Fargo Funeral Home in Kimberly, followed by full military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 PM until the time of the service.

The family would like to extend their special thanks for the warmth and kindness of Dr. Swanson, Dr. Homburg, and the staff at Cherry Meadows.

In lieu of flowers memorials will be directed to cancer research.
