Roy R. Dunkel

Roy Dunkel passed away peacefully early on the morning of August 4. 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was 83. Roy was born Kingsford, Michigan, on March 31, 1927, son of the late Gustave and Ida (Lietzke) Dunkel. Roy married Carolyn Keller on August 24, 1963 in Bellwood, Illinois. He worked at American Can in Maywood, Illinois for twenty years, and in 1969 relocated his family to Appleton where he began work for Appleton Papers. After twenty years of faithful service, he retired in 1989. Roy was a former member of the United States Army, serving from 1949 until 1951, and was also a member of the Harvey Pierre Post #2778 of the V.F.W. Since arriving in Appleton in 1969, the family had been active and valued members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Roy was also a member of Neenah's Retiree Club.

Roy will be remembered by all as a loyal Packer and Cubs fan and an avid reader. Through the years, he enjoyed playing cards, camping, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife: Carolyn Dunkel of Appleton; three children: Deborah (Charles) Antley of Carpentersville, Illinois and their children Ashley and Casey; Michael Dunkel of Appleton and his children Sydnee and Nicholas; and Robert Dunkel of Appleton; a brother: Paul (Shirley) Dunkel of Appleton; a sister: Betty (Stan) Nowak of Florence; a sister-in-law: Lorraine Dunkel of Florence; and a brother-in-law: Eric Keller of Plymouth, Michigan. There are also many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, as well as several brothers and sisters.

The funeral service for Roy, with full military honors, will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 9, 2010 at PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2330 E. Calumet Street in Appleton. Rev. Gary Nokleberg and Rev. Roger McQuistion will be officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM and again Monday at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who cared for Roy at St. Elizabeth Hospital, 4 West. The doctors and nurses – everyone who touched our family – we thank you for your loving care.
