Laura (Schmitz) Hargis left a message on November 27, 2018:
This world lost an extraordinary person. I was fortunate to be one of Mr Ernst’s students. (NHS 1991) He was a brilliant, kind, dedicated, and caring teacher. He found humor and silliness in life’s little things. He truly knew how it felt to be a teenager. Years later, he’d see my family out and about and always took time to say Hello and wish us well. I will always remember Mr Ernst and the seeds he planted in my life, and in countless other lives.
My deepest condolences to Roger’s family.

With your passion for teaching so beautifully blended with your love of your students, you impacted thousands of lives within your classroom. As a colleague, you were always willing to share your expertise and a laugh. As a friend, you were loyal and a joy to be with. As one of your first students at NHS, the impact you made on my life was enormous and set me on a path to be an educator. To this day, over 50 years later, I still think of you. As a colleague and friend to my mother, Jan Smith, you stood out and we often talked about you. She has such fond memories of you! Yes, you will be missed, but you will live on in the hearts of your family, friends, and your students. Thank you for being a part of our lives!

Although I didn't have Mr. Ernst as a teacher, my father was his fellow professional and spoke so very highly of him and his tireless dedication to English, forensics and changing lives. I'm terribly sorry to learn this news and I will always remember him with fondness. We had a great conversation at my class's 45th reunion in 2017 and he was so generous with his time. Pease
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

It was a real joy and honor to know Roger as a neighbor on Green Acres Lane and fellow teacher at NHS...kind, funny, gentle...our kids grew up together. Whenever we would meet years later, we always had good talks...and he always ended every conversation with "Thanks for listening"...something I find myself doing now as well!
Peace to you Roger...and to your family.
