Whitely, Robert Quentin

Age 86, of Appleton, Wisconsin, died August 31, 2006 at Vallhaven Care Center in Neenah, Wisconsin after a brief illness. He was born on May 22, 1920 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the son of Franklin Ruelke and Ruth (Whitely) Ruelke Ellis.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, he joined the Navy. He completed his officer’s training at Columbia University in New York and Annapolis, Maryland. He served in WWII aboard the destroyer escort USS Wilhoite in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He married Marian Cooley on February 11, 1945 in Rockford, Illinois, where he resided until 1995 at which time they retired to Appleton, Wisconsin.
In 1960 he became president of Piggly Wiggly Midwest Co. Later he served as president of C&W Super Markets Inc. In Rockford he was a member of the 2nd Congregational Church, Midday Club, University Club, Rockford Country Club and the Rockford Chapter of Rotary International where he was recognized as a “Paul Harris Fellow”.
His survivors include his wife Marian, sons George (Patricia) Whitely, Middleton; Thomas (Cynthia) Whitely, Appleton; Robert (Sharon) Whitely, St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Kimberly and Stephanie Whitely, a sister, Yvonne Weinzierl, LaCrosse, a niece, Judith Carlberg, Frederick, MD; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at 6:30 pm. Friends may call at the funeral home at 4:00 pm until the time of service. Burial will be held in Spring Lake Cemetery in Aurora, Illinois. A memorial fund is being established.
