Richard S. Stowe

January 2, 1925 — October 13, 2001

Richard S. Stowe
423 East Longview Drive
Appleton

Age 76, died peacefully early Saturday, October 13, 2001 at Brewster Village after several years of illness. His wife of 39 years and their children were blessed to share his last hours with him. He was born on January 2, 1925 in Milwaukee to Ray and Irene (Scribner) Stowe, and grew up in West Allis. A veteran of WW II, Richard served in the United States Army in the European Theatre, and upon returning home, completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in French at the University of Wisconsin where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He also held the Master of Arts degree from UCLA and the PhD degree from the University of Wisconsin. After four years of teaching French and Spanish at Park College in Missouri, he joined the faculty of Lawrence College in 1957 where he served as a member of the French Department until his retirement in 1990. Richard was a member of First United Methodist Church of Appleton, and a number of professional organizations. He was devoted to volunteer work in retirement at the Community Clothes Closet. Dick cherished his family, church and college, and had a deep love of classical music, particularly opera and vocal repertoire.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, a son Andrew (Angel), Appleton, a daughter Elizabeth (Sean) Tremblay, Lakeville, MN, two grandsons, Zachary Morack Stowe and Adam Tremblay. He is further survived by his sister, Elizabeth (John) Nelson, Coppell TX and her children and grandchildren who are dear to his heart; a number of Stowe and Scribner cousins; and many dear friends and colleagues whose loving support upheld and comforted him. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter. The family is most grateful to the staff of the Alzheimer’s Unit at Brewster Village (Outagamie County long-term care facility) for the unfailing tenderness and the respect for his dignity that Richard received during the two months of his residency there.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street, with Reverend Kent Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 pm Monday and on Tuesday at the church from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish to may send memorial gifts to Lawrence University, First United Methodist Church, or the Community Clothes Closet.
