Dick Stack passed quietly from this earth Sunday, September 9, 2001, with his family at his side. He now resides in our hearts and is eternally at rest.

Dick was born on December 6, 1922, in College Point, Long Island, New York, to the late Daniel J. and Angelica (Sulzbach) Stack, Sr. He married Alice (Sis) Zuehlke on June 25, 1948. They have five children.

Dick's life's journeys taught him to see the world with a unique perspective. Kindness, compassion and respect for others was his hallmark. He lived on Long Island in the summer and Palm beach, Florida, during the rest of the year. He graduated from Palm Beach High School. At 14 he started a business buying and selling sailboats. Later he performed in a jazz band singing and playing instruments. At age 18 he earned with his pilot's license after instruction from his brother Dan. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 graduating in 1943 as a 1st Lt. and pilot of a B-17 bomber. He was responsible for the 10-man crew, which was assigned to the 346th squadron of the 99th Bomb Group, 15, Air Force in Foggia, Italy. He completed 51 missions and lost 2 crew members to flack. He was awarded the Air Medal with clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Dick graduated from the University of Notre dame in 1948 with a degree in business administration. He and Sis moved to Wisconsin in 1948. He involved himself in raising a family and in many business ventures with Insurance Services, Patterson Company, Valley Bancorporation and Air Wisconsin being the most notable. Most important, however, he was a good friend to many.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sis; his son Rick and daughter-in-law Lynda Stack, Appleton; his daughter Lynn Stack and son-in-law Allen Rosenthal, Anchorage, Alaska; his daughter, Margaret Stack, Wauwatosa; his son James Stack, Appleton; and his son John Stack, Appleton; his four granddaughters, Katie, Sara and Laura Stack and Mara Rosenthal; his sister, Ara McDermott, Arlington, Texas; and his brother, John (Aurelie) Stack, Mattituck, Long Island, New York; and many nieces and nephews. WICHMAN TRI-COUNTY CHAPEL

We stand on the seashore at the break of a new day. His ship quietly begins to move out and away. The ocean and sky are blue and gray. We watch him slip below the horizon as he leaves our gaze. What was large and noble is no longer in view. As we speak the words ''he is gone to be seen nevermore'' words on the other side declare: ''here he comes; to be seen evermore.''
