Age 90, passed away at Heartwood Homes Senior Living, Appleton, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. He was born on the family farm in Grand Chute on May 30, 1920 the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Lawall) Baumann. On May 1, 1948 he married Virginia Schultz. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2009. Ray farmed and then worked for Appleton Machine Company as a crane operator. He then founded and operated Baumann Sheet Metal Works, providing services for heating and cooling, and sheet metal products, for 50 years. Ray was a volunteer fire fighter with the Grand Chute Fire Department for 38 years, including serving as Assistant Fire Chief and first aid responder, and was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He will be remembered for his love of gardening, volunteering at church and the fire department, and helping his family, relatives and friends in any way he could.

Ray is survived by his children: William “Bill” (Marleen) Baumann of West Bend, Edward “Ed” (Claire) Baumann of Hortonville, Cecile “Ceil” (Brad) Grunert of Menomonee Falls, and Marie (Dennis ) Eggert of Appleton: grandchildren: Daniel, Timothy (special friend, Kara Weed) and Rebecca (special friend, Nick Calnin) Baumann, Megan, Brett (Andrea June) and Brice (Erika) Grunert, and their daughter, Angie, and Jeffrey (Emanuela) Eggert, and Elizabeth (Thomas) Leick; brother: Carl (Eileen) Baumann; sisters: Marie Bushman and Elizabeth (Russ) Burns; sisters-in-law: Marion Baumann, Clara Baumann, Jean Baumann and Betty Schultz; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; brothers and sisters: Joseph (Jeanette) Baumann, Gertrude (Emmett) Decker, Nick Baumann, Blanche (Richard) Strelka, Clem Baumann, Henry Baumann, Claire (Leona) Baumann, Eugene Bushman, Eugene Weyers and Roy Bogenschutz; infant brother and sister: George and Marie Therese; and brothers-in-law: Gordon (Hildegarde) Schultz and Eugene Schultz.

The funeral liturgy for Ray will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with Fr. Thomas J. Farrell officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park.

A memorial fund in Ray's name is being established.

The family extends a special thank you to the caring and supportive staff of Heartwood Homes, Affinity Hospice, and Valley Visiting Nurses Association. Further, a very special thank you to Deacon Rick Simon for his many visits and support to Ray and the entire family.
