Formerly of Kimberly, Age 97, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. She was born in Mackville on September 22, 1908, daughter of the late John and Odelia (Fries) Baumann. She was married to her husband of 49 years, John Smits, who preceded her in death in 1979. In her younger years Phyllis thoroughly enjoyed her time at the cottage being with her family and fishing. She was very good at playing sheepshead and baked wonderful lemon pies and homemade bread. She enjoyed listening to her husband’s polka band, Leroy’s Dutch Boys.

Phyllis is survived by her children: Jane (Eugene) Romenesko of Little Chute, Carol (Hank) Wulterkens of Combined Locks, Joyce (James) Williams of Hilbert, John (Elizabeth) Smits of Combined Locks, Ken (Jan) Smits of Combined Locks, Florian (Grace) Smits of Winneconne, and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Smits of Kimberly; 33 grandchildren; 75 great grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Romenesko, Sister Mary Florian, and Mary (Leonard) Tennie; brothers: Silver and Harold Baumann. She is preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; sons: Clarus and Ronald; grandsons: Tim and Doug Smits, and Ron and Don Romenesko; brothers: Frank (Marie) Baumann, Cyril (Evelyn) Baumann, John (Ann) Baumann, and Victor (Hildegaard) Baumann; sisters: Lucille (Nick) Fox, Helen (Irvin) Stingle, Ethel Baumann, and Leah Baumann; and a brother-in-law, Clem Romenesko.

The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, Kimberly Campus, 600 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 1, 2006 at St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton.

The family extends a special thank you to St. Paul Home for their wonderful care for our mother.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Phyllis’ name is being established.
