Swartwout, Paul Frost

810 Memorial Drive Chilton, formerly of 2325 S. Gladys Ave. Appleton.

Age 92, died April 17, 2002 after a lingering illness. Paul was born August 22, 1909 and was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. He was the youngest of seven children born to Willis B. Swartwout I and Marion (Frost) Swartwout. Paul’s parents were founding members of Kingsley United Methodist Church of Milwaukee and provided Paul with a strong foundation of faith. When Paul’s brother Arthur died at the age of nine from diphtheria, his family donated a stained glass window, engraved in Arthur’s memory, to their church. Paul was active in his church as a member of the Methodist Men and the church choir. Paul was also an excellent pianist. He had studied to be a concert pianist. However, he gave up this pursuit when it became evident that he would not be one of the top pianists in the world.

Paul was also a very intelligent man. He attended Marquette University and later transferred to Purdue University where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Paul worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the Pabst brewing company where he met and fell in love with the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President. They eloped to Maquoketa, Iowa, where Paul married Helen Dorothy (Brauer) Swartwout on January 20, 1940. They enjoyed 49 wonderful years of marriage. Paul also worked as a mechanical engineer for the Schlitz and Stroh’s brewing companies in Milwaukee, WI where he and Helen raised their family.

Paul and Helen were the proud parents of one son, Dr. Paul Richard, and two daughters, Marion Janice and Lucille Anne. Paul was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Paul enjoyed fishing, golfing, and gardening. He was also an active member and officer of the National Association of Power Engineers. After retirement at age 62, Paul worked for U.W. Madison for three years. In more recent years, Paul had been living and enjoying many leisure time pursuits in Appleton. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Appleton. Paul moved to Chilton Health and Rehabilitation Center in July of 2001 due to a decline in health and resided there until he passed away quietly in the presence of friends.

Paul was preceded in death by: his parents, Marion (Frost) Swartwout, and Willis B. Swartwout I; three sisters and their husbands, Alberta and Harry Leighton, Louisa and Dr. William Domann, and Florence and Ervin Keepman; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Willis B. Swartwout II and Evelyn, Delbert, and Arthur Swartwout who died at age nine. Paul was further proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Helen (Brauer) Swartwout in 1996 at the age of 89, and by his dear son, Dr. Paul Richard Swartwout.

Paul is survived by his daughters and one daughter-in-law: Marion Janice (Swartwout) Archambault of Appleton and former son-in-law and friend Louis E. and Sunny (Mason) Archambault of Green Bay; Lucille Anne (Swartwout) and Jerome Armand Goodman of Wauwatosa, and Linda (Rector) Swartwout of Oshkosh. Paul was further survived by five grandchildren: Louis Paul and Coralee (Penebad) Archambault of Miami, Florida; Paul Charles Archambault and special friend Corey Hammes of Milwaukee; Alyssa Anne Archambault of Appleton and Green Bay; Jerome Armand Goodman III of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Nathan Daniel Goodman of Bozeman, Montana. Paul was also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and their families as well as his special friends: Carl Schneeberger, his Stephen Minister, and Bernice and Charles Crane, his neighbors.

Paul was a Gentleman and a Gentle Man with a wonderful sense of humor and a generous heart. He was well loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
