Norbert A. Kaminski

October 11, 1925 — April 10, 2009

Kaminski, Norbert A.

Norbert A. Kaminski, age 83, passed away peacefully after a short battle with lung cancer on Friday, April 10, 2009. It's fitting that he joined his Savior in Heaven on Good Friday for no one defined the word “good” more completely than Norb. And as his friend Father James Vanden Hogen said shortly after his passing, “It was definitely a Good Friday for Norb because he is now with his Lord.”
Norb was born on October 11, 1925, to Alois and Frances (Korlesky) Kaminski of Manitowoc. A hard worker all his life, Norb spent part of his childhood selling newspapers and working in a mattress factory. He met his wife, La Verne Evers of Little Chute, when they were teenagers working in the Manitowoc Shipyards. Norb joined the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in Europe during World War II, earning his Purple Heart when he was wounded in battle outside Munich, Germany.
Norb and La Verne were married on May 11, 1945. They moved to Kimberly, where he spent over 30 years as a faithful employee of the Kimberly-Clark/Mid-Tech Paper Mill. But his favorite role was that of “Dad.” He and La Verne raised three sons and one daughter. In later years, he was a very involved, popular and proud grandfather to their ten grandchildren.
Norb loved life and found enjoyment in most things he did. He was a gifted craftsman who enjoyed building and fixing things for his family and friends. His most creative project was building his own camping trailer, which his family enjoyed for years at Lake Metonga. He served on the Credit Committee for the Kimberly Credit Union and sang in the Holy Name Parish (now known as Holy Spirit Parish) choir. Yet his favorite thing was sitting and talking with his loved ones, especially up north at his place in Lakewood or at the shop.
Norb is survived by his “top girl,” La Verne; his children: Dennis (Ellen) Kaminski, Bonnie (Bob) Elliott, Randy (Marge) Kaminski, and Terry (JoAnne) Kaminski; his grandchildren Amy and Jason Kaminski; Erin Elliott and fiancé Aaron Kazik; Ryan (Jamie) Elliott; Jesse Kaminski and fiancé Lindsay Roberson; Nicole (Aaron) Portman; Jake Kaminski; and Max, Katy and Kyle Kaminski. He also has two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Samantha Portman. He is further survived by one sister, Florence Sitkiewitz; two brothers, David and Carl (Jan) Kaminski; seven sisters-in-law: Helen Evers, Dorothy Reider, Mardie (Jim) Smith, Evelyn Gambsky, Jean (Whitey) Van Asten, Audrey (Ron) Huss, and Shirley (Jerry) Broeren; and one brother-in-law, Orville (Shirley) Evers.
Norb was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters-in-law: Frances Kaminski and Marion Joosten; and six brothers-in-law: Joe Evers, Vernon Verhoeven, Joe Joosten, Carl Reider, Faye Gambsky, and George Sitkiewitz.
Norb was also loved by many incredible friends, including Marv and Julie Hooyman and other special friends in Green Valley, Arizona. His amazing spirit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by us all.
The Memorial Mass for Norb will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Holy Spirit Parish, 600 E. Kimberly Ave. Kimberly, with Father Jim Vanden Hogen as celebrant. Visitation will begin at the church on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of mass. A memorial fund has been established in Norb's name.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the third-floor cancer ward at Appleton Medical Center and Fr. Jim Vanden Hogen. We also would like to thank all those who have prayed for and supported Norb.
