Myrtle B. Ogilvie

Myrtle Ogilvie passed away on Sunday evening, March 9, 2014, at age 88. She was born in Marathon County, town of Stettin, on July 21, 1925, daughter of the late Edwin and Etta (Grendel) Baumann. As a young school girl she attended the Rib Falls Grade School. She was a 1942 graduate of the Marathon High School and a 1947 graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, with a degree in Home Economics. From 1947 until 1950, Myrtle worked as the Outagamie County Home Demonstration Agent.

On May 6, 1950, she married Douglas Ogilvie of Appleton, Wisconsin. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They include: Diane (Garth) Schneider and children Robert (Jen) Friebel, Kay (Ryan) Myers, Ian and Ryker Schneider; Lynn VanSchyndel; David (Patricia) Ogilvie and children Dustin (Cody) Ogilvie, Michelle (Rene) L'Esperance; Amy (Gary) Cebulski and children Gregory (Sara) Cebulski, Bradley (Vanessa) Cebulski, Jaclyn (Jon) Charais; Mary (Alan) Seefeld and children Julia (Jordan) Hoesley, David (Michelle) Seefeld, Emily (Dustin) Weiler; Andrew (Connie) Ogilvie and sons Joshua and Matthew; Ann (Joel) Huebner and daughters Alisa, Kayla and Heidi. The great-grandchildren are Elizabeth, Lindsey, Leila, Natalie, Mikaiah, Kailyn, Matthew and Brock.

Myrtle leaves behind two sisters; Mabel Tuss and Myra Schultz and a brother-in-law Art Neidermeier. Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Doug, in 2013, a son-in-law Hank VanSchyndel, her sisters: Edna (Robert) Neidermeier, Irene Rose, Jeannette (Tom) Eldredge, Ruth Neidermeier; her brother Ed (Alice) Baumann; and her two brothers-in-law: Joe Tuss and Bud Schultz.

Being the mother of seven children and the wife of a very active businessman, Myrtle still found time to become very involved in countless activities. She was a longtime and faithful member of Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, deacon and helped on many committees. She also served as a volunteer naturalist at Mosquito Hill Nature Center in New London, and served on the advisory boards for Appleton Art Center and the Thompson Community Center. She was a charter member of the Altrusa Club of Appleton and the Y's Menette's. One of Myrtles greatest joys was her involvement in the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation. Her affiliation with the federation made it possible for her to be a member of the Paper Valley Garden Club where she held all of the different chairs over the years and was also a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge. Myrtle was a landscape consultant, a District Director, a nationally accredited Gladiolus Council judge, a master gardener, a 4-H leader and a member of the Advisory Committee at the Memorial Park Arboretum.

Using her farm girl upbringing, Myrtle also enjoyed raising horses, goats and chickens and bees. Her garden was large and filled with large assortments of flowers and vegetables. Canning of the veggies and making of apple cider was an annual and fun filled ritual.

Myrtle was also blessed to be awarded with the Wisconsin Historical Society Award of Merit, the Walter Rugland Community Service Award, Rotary's Paul Harris Fellowship, and the Lifetime Philanthropic Award, all with her husband, Douglas. She was also presented with the Phil Sealy Award by the Appleton Art Center, the Hazel Donnelly Award from the District Garden Club, and the Lydia Schafer Outstanding Gardener Award by the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation.

A memorial service for Myrtle will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Avenue in Appleton, with Rev. Michael Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
