WELLER, MURNA WICKERT

Murna W. Weller, age 103, entered her Eternal Home Monday, March 23, 2009, at Appleton Health Care. Murna was born on March 9, 1906, in New London, Wisconsin, to the late Otto and Matilda (Pomarenke) Wickert. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1923 and Lawrence University in 1927, and did Master Degree work at the University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh. Murna was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority, the nation's second oldest sorority. She taught school at Quinney Elementary School in Kaukauna for 25 years. Murna was a Worthy Matron of Fidelity, Eastern Star; Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; past president of the Appleton Women's Club, District II of Wisconsin; organizer, originator and President of the Shriner's Hospital Auxiliary; president of the YMCA Auxiliary and voted the most outstanding member of the YMCA. She served as Cancer Society Chairman for ten years, and was also Chairman of the Heart Fund Campaign. Murna taught many classes in first aid, including the fireman's class. She was active in First English Lutheran Church, as an usher and lay reader, and secretary of the First English Ladies Aid. Murna was a past president of the Pan American Club, member and membership chairman of the Altrusa Club, and was a member and program chairman of the AAUW. She was a certified and registered Goran Bridger teacher, having taught over 10, 000 students. Murna taught bridge on 43 cruises, including those to Alaska, the Carribean and the Panama Canal. She was a Life Master in the ACBL, with 4, 000 points earned. Murna served as Secretary of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Bridge Association for 25 years. She played bridge and in Appleton, Tamarac and Pompano, Florida until she was 100. She was given the State Of Wisconsin's Most Admired Senior Citizen Award in 1975. Murna married Hilbert “Kelly” Weller in 1930 and lived in Appleton all her married life; he preceded her in death on November 7, 1974. She is survived by her three children, Janis (Allan) Mink, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Charles (Joy) Weller, Appleton; Bonny (Brian) Pacetti, Summerfield, Florida; her 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, two nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by her brother Harlow Wickert and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be at NOON on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, Appleton, with Rev. George Detweiler officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. A memorial has been established in Murna's name to benefit First English Lutheran Church (326 E. North
Avenue, Appleton 54911). The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Appleton Health Care and especially Sherry Banker, her home caregiver, for their loving care.
