Mary E. Miles (nee Kreiss), 103, died Thursday April 21, 2011 at St Elizabeth Hospital. She was born in Appleton, August 3, 1907 a daughter of the late William and Bess Kreiss. Mary married Kirk L. Miles on June 27 1934.
Mary graduated from Appleton High School in 1926. She graduated from Lawrence University in 1930. During that time she was a piano student at the Lawrence Conservatory, a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, and past president of the Alumni Association. After graduation, Mary was a librarian at Appleton Public Library. In her later years she did substitute work at the library. She was also a librarian at the Heritage for nine years. Mary was an active member of First Congregational Church for over 89 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and church school pianist. She was a church circle member for 25 years. In her earlier years, Mary had been active in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Mary is survived by two children, son, Peter (Mary) Miles, Appleton, and daughter, Marti (Richard) Ward, Woodbury, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Sarah) Miles, Appleton, Kelly (Brian) Miles, Scottsdale, Arizona, Karen (Ronald) Jahnke, Neenah, Linda Srnka, DePere, and Charles (Sharyl) Glaser, Littleton, Colorado; eight great-grandchildren, Jennifer Keddell, Michael Keddell, Kaylee Glaser, Dalton Glaser, Alexander Miles, Madison Miles, Miles VandenHeuvel, and Ava VandenHeuvel; She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Kirk, her daughter, Mary Lee Darling, two brothers, James Kreiss, and William Kreiss, sister, Evelyn Monteith; two sons-in law, Don Glaser, and Joseph Darling; two sisters-in law, Dorothy Kreiss, and Kathryne Kreiss; and a brother-in law, Ray Monteith.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Monday April 25, 2011 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 East South River Street, Appleton, with Rev. Jane B. Anderson officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the hour of service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Mary's family would like to thank the staff at St Elizabeth's Hospital, and would like to give a very special thank you to Jean Coenraad, her special friend and helper, for their care and compassion.
