Mark V. Nelson

October 22, 1949 — September 9, 2012

Mark Nelson, 62 of Kimberly, Wisconsin, quietly passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2012 after an eight month struggle from the effects of heart disease. Born on October 22, 1949 in Gladstone Michigan, he was proud to be a Yooper. Mark never knew what bored meant. His many hobbies included walks in the woods, hunting, fishing, golf and organic gardening, a hobby that became his passion and occupation in his retirement.

Mark was a kind and generous person who will always be remembered for his unselfish love of family and friends. He was a scout master and charter member/past president of the church council of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Combined Locks, Wisconsin. Mark treasured his faith and was a lifelong advocate of education. On September 12, 1970, Mark married Gayle Pomeroy in Nahma, Michigan.

In addition to Gayle, he is survived by three children: Ryan Nelson; Corinna (Philip) Wells; and Kyle (Felicia) Nelson. There are also four grandchildren: Riley and Raegan Nelson and Clara and Oscar Wells; and a special family friend: Leslie (Tylor) Clark. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Andy (Jolane) Nelson; Connie (Rob) Salmi; Carolyn Nelson; Steve (Cathy) Nelson; and Stuart (Sandi) Nelson, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law: Herb (Donna) Pomeroy and Russ (Diane) Pomeroy. He was preceded in death by his parents: Hjalmar and Edna Nelson and by Gayle's parents: Alvin and Loretta Pomeroy.

In 1972 Mark graduated from Michigan Technological University with his BSChE, he completed his MBA at UW Oshkosh in 1986. He worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper for 33 years in several positions from Process Engineer to Manager of Process Optimization. He was an active National TAPPI Member from 1976-1994. Through that organization he was given the Paul W. Magnabosco Outstanding Local Section Award at a ceremony in New Orleans in April 2012. He was a Certified Quality Engineer and a member of the American Society for Quality.
