I was close friends with Mark's brother Fred, who died just this year. I first knew Mark from the (very) early 70's when he hung around our rock band practices in his basement (Fred was the guitar player). Over the next couple of years, I got to know Mark better and visited him a few times at his lakefront place near Waupaca. He was a very nice guy, and always welcoming. I considered him a friend. Right after Fred died, I had a nice long talk with Mark on the phone (after all those years) and caught up. It is sad to have both brothers pass in such quick succession. Especially after losing Jeff not that long ago (who lived for quite a while near Fred and me in Colorado in the 90's and who also hung out during band practice in the 70's as a small kid). I didn't know Mark's son, but from what I heard, he sounds a lot like Fred in his interests and talents. It seems fitting that Fred's acoustic guitar passed to Mark, and then to his son.

I had the privilege of knowing Mark at three different times in my life - as a friend of my parents when I was a youngster, in my late 20s as a coworker, and in my 40s as a friend. He was a good man with a big heart, and would give the shirt off his back. I'll always remember him for his compassion, generosity, and sense of humor. I'm grateful to have called him "friend". My condolences to Becca, Steven, and his family.
