Mark D. Waltman

February 25, 1954 — January 1, 2019

Mark D. Waltman, age 64, beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at his home in Appleton. Mark was born February 25, 1954, in Appleton, son of the late Frank and Irma (Sturm) Waltman. Mark grew up in Appleton and graduated from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. At Stevens Point, Mark met the love of his life, his wife Sue Waltman (Van Nuland). Mark and Sue were married for 41 wonderful years.

Above all else, Mark was a man of faith. He is now rejoined in heaven with Jesus and those who have passed before him. In addition to his parents, Mark is predeceased by his father-in-law, mother-in-law (Marty & Nelly Van Nuland) and brother-in-law (Don Van Nuland).

Mark worked his entire career in the insurance industry. He began his career with Wausau Insurance and continued with the company through multiple name and ownership changes, ultimately retiring as a Vice President with UnitedHealth. Mark received multiple awards and distinctions, both from his employer and the insurance industry. Mark was able to retire early and focus on his other passions.

In retirement, Mark devoted much of his time to social and political causes important to him. Mark served as Treasurer for the Democratic Party of Outagamie County, was a delegate to the national convention in 2016, and was currently serving as the 8th CD Representative on the Administrative Committee for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

In addition to politics, Mark’s other hobbies included travel and golf. He was able to visit over 50 countries, enjoy many sites around the world with his wife, family and friends, and played golf where ever he went. Mark was an avid Packers, Badgers and Brewers fan, always cheering on his teams.
Mark is survived by his wife, Sue, sister, Meribeth Waltman, brother-in-law, Michael (Sue) Van Nuland, nieces and nephew, Melissa (Aaron) Schaefer, Matthew (Teresa) Van Nuland, Danielle Van Nuland and Anna Van Nuland, three great-nephews, Andrew Schaefer, Ryan Schaefer, and Mason Van Nuland (i.e. “the Greats”), and countless other family members and friends. He is a longtime friend of Bill W.

Family meant everything to Mark, as evidenced by his devotion to his wife, Sue, and – as anyone who knew him – his three nieces Melissa, Danielle, and Anna, and his nephew, Matt. He doted on them, enjoyed surprising them, getting them to laugh uncontrollably, and was extremely proud of their many accomplishments. And, as the family grew, he was blessed with a bonus niece, Teresa, and a bonus nephew, Aaron – along with three beautiful great-nephews. Mark was proud to have introduced Matt to the game of golf, as well as how to roll a pair of dice.

Importantly, Mark regularly expressed gratitude for his many blessings. He was a great man who touched the lives of countless people, always putting the needs of others above and before his own. Mark will be dearly missed by everyone that knew him. We love you Mark.
