Marjorie L. Nelson

July 29, 1948 — January 22, 2002

Majorie L. Nelson
Little Chute

Age 53, went home to be with her Lord and her eternal family January 22, after a 10 1/2 year battle with breast cancer. While her illness greatly impacted her life, especially since its recurrence three years ago, nevertheless her disease did not define her time on earth.

Instead, Marge was a woman of faith, who with her husband Steve founded in 1980 the congregation that would become Christ the King Lutheran Church in Combined Locks and Sherwood. She was instrumental in the church’s life (having originally suggested the new congregation’s name); she provided volunteer leadership in Christian Education, music, and service. To Marge, believing the Word always led to doing God’s Word.

She was devoted to her family and friends, raising three children and creating a home where relatives, neighbors, and friends found hospitality and grace. She made and gifted over 60 afghans to those whom she loved.

She was an educator, teaching elementary school for 3-1/2 years in the early 1970’s and later as a substitute teacher, especially at Little Chute Middle School, and a community servant, offering time and leadership to good causes like scouting and schools, and to those in need.

Marge was born in Milwaukee on July 29, 1948, the daughter of the late George and Annie Laurie Megow. She was a 1966 graduate of South Milwaukee High School where she enjoyed playing flute in the orchestra and band. She graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul in 1970. She married Steven Nelson July 1, 1972 at her home church, South Milwaukee United Methodist. She taught in the Fridley school system while Steve studied at the Lutheran seminary in St. Paul. They spent his internship year in Escondido, California in 1974-75, and then accepted a call to Sabylund Lutheran in Stockholm, Wisconsin where they lived from 1976-1980. The Nelsons moved to Little Chute in 1980 to begin Christ the King Church.

Marge is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, Steven; two daughters: Kristina and Mary; one son, Thomas; two sisters: Jeanette (James) Slagg of South Milwaukee, and Laurie Ann Dunn of Tucson; one brother, Harland (Joan) of Point Pleasant, NJ; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: LeRoy and Shirley Nelson of Spring Valley; Teresa and Bruce Stumo of Barron; David and Karilyn Corbett of Clayton; and Daniel and Kristi Nelson of Lakeville, MN; 17 nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. Her parents and her cousin Jackie Megow preceded her in death.

Friends may call at Christ the King, 601 S. Washington (Cty “N”) in Combined Locks from 4-8pm Friday, January 25. The service celebrating her life will be at 11am Saturday, January 26, at the church, with the Revs. Bill Schroeder and Doug Bisbee officiating. A memorial fund to Christ the King has been established. Arrangements by Wichmann Funeral Home. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Avi Bar Lev, Amy, and staff of Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology.
