Marion R. Lemke

December 24, 1915 — August 18, 2004

Age 88, passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. Marion was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin on December 24, 1915, daughter of the late Anton and Laura (Schulz) Lemke. She was a 1932 graduate of the Kaukauna High School and in 1936 received her Bachelor of Arts Degree Magna Cum Laude from Lawrence University in Appleton. She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1936. Marion received her Master of Arts degree in 1939 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and continued her education by attending summer sessions at St. Norbert College in DePere, at Exeter College in Oxford, England in 1965, and at Brasernose College, also in Oxford in 1994.

Her teaching career, which spanned thirty-nine years, took her to Algoma High School, Kokomo, Indiana Junior College, Kaukauna High School, Xavier High School in Appleton, and Holy Cross Catholic School in Kaukauna. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kaukauna, the Kaukauna Legion Auxiliary, the East Shore Human Association in Chilton, the Kaukauna Area Board of Education from 1976 to 1982, the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, and the Kaukauna Community Health Associates. After her retirement from the teaching profession in 1975, Marion traveled extensively with many trips to Europe, England, and Ireland. She also made a tour of the Pacific, including China and the Philippines. She had explored Africa from North to South, including a week in Egypt and had taken a circle tour of South America including the Galapagos Islands. She had also visited India, Nepal, Mexico, Canada, and had toured extensively through out the United States, including Hawaii. Marion was the author of numerous travel articles that have been published in local newspapers. She had also published a book, Let the Horse Gallop, which recalled the events she experienced while driving rented automobiles in Europe, Ireland, and England.

Marion in survived by two godsons: James Arthur Silver, III of Arlington, Texas and Richard Francis Parker of North Carolina; a special cousin: Athlyn Andrews Woolley of Colleyville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother John Anton Lemke who presumably died while in the hands of the Japanese during World War II in the Philippine Islands.

Funeral services for Marion will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 23, 2004 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, 804 Grignon Street in Kaukauna with Rev. Mark Luetzow officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9 AM until the hour of the service.
