I am the youngest in the family and Mom always called me her "tagalong." When I was 4 years old, she went back to work outside the home, first part-time and then full time when I went to school full time. Mom had to arrange her own child care for me; there were no child care centers then! She also had 2 full time jobs--the one she went to each day and the one at home, taking care of us. Mom often baked on her days off so we still had homemade cookies and bread in the house. I believe my mom was ahead of her time. Her working helped me go to college for which I will always be grateful. I also learned to be more independent and when I went to college, I taught a lot of my classmates how to do the laundry! We were also able to take a lot of vacations and as the "tagalong," I saw a lot of beautiful places and learned to appreciate traveling. When losing a parent, one always wishes they'd spent more time with them. I certainly feel that way. But as the youngest, I feel grateful that I had my mother in my life as long as I did.
