Marie A. Simon

July 10, 1914 — September 14, 2009

Marie Simon passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. She was 95. Marie was born in Kimberly on July 10, 1914, daughter of the late John and Mary (Plesser) Stein. On September 6, 1937, she married Gordon Simon; he preceded her in death in October of 1969. As a young woman, Marie worked as a beautician in both Appleton and New London, and after Gordon's death worked for Becker Industries and retired from the laundry department at St. Elizabeth Hospital at the age of sixty-five. Marie enjoyed vacationing and travel, and had seen much of the world. Perhaps her most memorable trip was her trip to the Holy Land on which she actually visited three continents. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Post 38 Auxiliary, the V.F.W. Post 2778 Auxiliary, and the Cooties. She loved to play cards, and during World War II helped start a card club that only recently disbanded. When her daughters were young, Marie was also a Girl Scout Leader. Most of all, she will be remembered as a devout Catholic, a longtime and faithful member of St. Therese Catholic Church, and a former member of its Christian Mothers Society.

Marie is survived by two daughters: Mary Kay (Clarence) Bradle of Appleton and Betty (Daniel) Burhans of Appleton; nine grandchildren: Martin (Tina) Bradle, Lynn Bradle, Matthew (Brenda) Bradle, Katherine (Scott) Meyer, Tammy (Michael) Handschke, Daniel (Connie) Burhans II, Anthony (Jennie) Burhans, Wendy Burhans, and Holly (Aaron) Maurice. There are also fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister: Jane Baumann of Appleton; a brother: James Stein of Shawano; a sister-in-law: Mabel Morey of Chicago; and a brother-in-law: Carl Van Vreede of Appleton. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Harold, sisters Margaret Van Vreede, Bernice (Floyd) Weisnicht, and Frances (Al) Vander Linden; brothers Frank (Alice) Stein and John (Frances) Stein; and a brother-in-law Robert Baumann.

The funeral liturgy for Marie will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Morrison Street in Appleton. Fr. Bill Hoffman will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again Saturday morning at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be a combined American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliary visitation at 7:30 PM Friday evening followed by a parish prayer service at 7:45 PM.
