My deepest sympathy and prayers are with Maria's family. She was a bright light in my day whenever I visited the ACES/Xavier offices. Maria always had a big smile and a sincere interest in others. She was not one to dwell on her own illness, but instead was determined to enjoy each day and her time with her family. That bright spirit and the memories she made will live on in all she touched.

I met Maria when our boys played on the Terrors soccer team and we kept in touch through her job at ACES. Maria always greeted everyone with a genuine smile- her positive outlook was contagious. I am sorry she will miss sharing in the future milestones of her family but I am sure she will be watching from Heaven.

My thoughts and prayers are with Maria's family. I met Maria through a mutual friend. I am a 6 yr breast cancer survivor and Maria gave me strength and faith to move on. I am saddened with the loss of her battle. I know she fought hard. God Bless you Maria.
Steve Herrmann left a message on April 6, 2009:
My thoughts and prayers are with Dave, the boys, and the rest of the family. In that I have lived in Indiana for more than 20 years, I did not have the honor of knowing Maria as well as I would have liked. The last time I saw Maria she graciously bailed me out of an incident that my cousins will likely forever remind me; "the blunder". I'm sure Maria wasn't thrilled to venture out in sub-zero weather that day (to bring me warm clothes for the Packer game)...yet she responded to that situation in the same manner that I had seen before; with compassion and with a smile. Maria was the epitome of grace, warmth, and caring every time I saw her.... May God bless you and bring you peace, Steve & Jayme Herrmann

John HYland left a message on April 6, 2009:
Maria was my boss for near 2 years at Aces in the Script program. We had a standing joke when I came in as a volunteer in the afternoons. As I was 80 I could get away with many things and I'd usually say "how's my favorite Maria or try to sing the song from "West Side Story". She would always say, "You don't know any other Maria!" I'd always admit that I didn't and we'd both have a big laugh. She was a real bright spot in my day. Always with a big smile and greeting. I was always grateful that she read my book and said she liked it. I lost a daughter in her 20's and I know how tough it is. My wife lost a sister to cancer who had three boys, 2, 4 and 6. God will take care and give you all strength. My wife and I will be in church on Friday. God Bless and Keep You. John and Pat Hyland

So sorry to hear about Maria, please pass on my condolences to her whole family. I was a childhood friend and neighbor of Maria's. She Jillie Watson and I hung out together and went to grade school together. I remember going to the house and watching her Mom knitting, learning how to knit, sneaking downstairs for chocolate covered peanuts (at the holidays), hanging out in the apple orchard and lots of time playing outside in the summer. She and her family brought alot of joy to my childhood. My sincere sympathy. Sue Spitz Petersen
