Margaret E. Brewster

Margaret Brewster, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, following a brief illness. Maggie was born in the home she currently resided in on July 18, 1932, daughter of the late Eathen and Emilia (Jennick) Brewster. As a young girl, she attended Holy Cross School in Kaukauna and at Kaukauna High School developed a love for art. She attended University of Wisconsin – Fox Valley and University of Wisconsin – Madison where she continued her study of art, but was called home before graduation due her father's illness. Margaret began work as a graphic artist at the Locks Mill, but always kept up her painting. She retired from the mill in 1990.

Maggie became a renowned artist throughout Wisconsin, and was best known for her watercolors, oils, and portraits. She exhibited and sold her work all over North America, including the Milwaukee Museum of Art, Minnesota Capitol Rotunda, Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, Neville Museum, Weidner Center, and Lambeau Field Atrium in Green Bay, and in Pike's Peak, Colorado. She is listed in the Who's Who in American Art, and was instrumental in beginning Kaukauna's Creative Art Group. She also chaired the art show at Thousand Islands Nature Center for almost twenty years.

Margaret was a member of the Friends of Thousand Islands, Kaukauna Historical Society, Kaukauna Creative Arts Group, Bay Area Watercolor Guild, Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and 1000 Friends of Wisconsin.

She leaves behind two sisters: Florence Brewster of Kaukauna and Geri Molda of Appleton; two brothers: Francis Brewster of Colorado Springs and James (Dolores) Brewster of Piedmont, California. There are also four nieces: Sue Bergeron of Kaukauna; Elizabeth (Kevin) Stover of Evanston, Illinois and his daughter Emily; Jennifer Brewster of Jackson, Michigan; and Julie Brewster of Colorado Springs and her daughters Christina and Alicia. Her six nephews are: Robert (Sharon) Brewster, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia and their son Bobby; Philip (Betty) Brewster of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois and their children Jessica and Zach; James A. Brewster Jr. of Oakland, California and their daughter Lauren; Rick (Debra) Brewster of Green Mountain Valley, Colorado and their sons Jason and Alex; David (Beth) Brewster of Brownsville, Minnesota and their daughters Payton and Sawyer; and Joe Brewster of Minneapolis. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Mary (Joseph) Bergeron; a brother: Robert (Mary Ellen) Brewster; a sister-in-law: Nancy Brewster; a brother-in-law: Walter Molda; and a nephew: Robert Bergeron.

The funeral liturgy for Maggie will be held at 11:00 on Monday, June 6, 2011 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Memorial funds are being established for Thousand Islands Nature Center and the Kaukauna Public Library.
