Age 95, died on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Villa Maria Rehab and Health Care Center in Hurley, WI. Mabel was born in Kelso, Washington, on October 7, 1905, daughter of the late John and Millie (Kennedy) Loomis. She married George Steele on September 20, 1924, and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage, until he preceded her in death in 1985. Mabel was active in many organizations, including the Rebecca’s, and serving as a Grey Lady at the King Veteran’s Home. She was also very active at the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mabel loved crafts; especially knitting and crocheting. She created bedspreads, doilies, tablecloths, dishrags, afghans and dolls. Mabel will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Charlotte (John) Sunie, Hurley; Dorothy (Carl) Herrick, Greenville; her two sons, Everett Steele, Florida; Roy (Doris) Steele, Greenville; her two brothers, Wesley and Roy Keith, both of Florida; her sister, Violet Bryan, Florida; 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two grandsons, Joseph Steele and Frederick John Sunie, and her daughter, Ellen Weber. Mabel’s Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 803 East College Avenue, Appleton, with Rev. Charles Valenti-Hein officiating. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 26 from 4 until 7 p.m., and again at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to benefit Memorial Presbyterian Church.
