Lowell H. Matthies

August 18, 1938 — April 27, 2014

Lowell Matthies, age 75, was called to the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2014. Lowell was born in the Calumet County town of Rantoul on August 18, 1938, son of the late Arwin and Amanda (Zachowski) Matthies. He graduated from the Brillion High School, and on April 11, 1959, married the former Carol Schmitting in Hilbert. Over the years, Lowell was employed by Wisconsin Wire Works, Allied Firelite, Universal Paper, and most recently by Office Technology. He loved listening to polka music, reading, and spending time outside. When his health permitted, Lowell was very active and enjoyed fishing, car shows, walks in the woods, biking, staying current with the news, and learning about historical people, places, and things. He was also a master “fixer-upper”, and enjoyed puttering around the house. Lowell and Carol are also longtime, faithful, and active members at Riverview Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton.

Lowell is survived by his wife: Carol Matthies of Appleton; three children: Ken (Debra) Matthies of Appleton; Neal (Kristin) Matthies of Oshkosh; and Sheila (David) Abitz of Grafton; eight grandchildren: Ryan (Jessie) Matthies, Evan (Bryan) Rezin, Alexandra Matthies and her special friend Matt Leasure, Max and Colby Matthies, and Haley, Mitchell, and Timothy Abitz; two great-grandchildren: Dahmon and Emerson; a brother: Phillip (Bonnie) Matthies of Nevada; a brother-in-law: Willard (Betty) Schmitting of Sheboygan; and a sister-in-law: Wynogene Schmitting of Menasha. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law: Art Schmitting, Richard (Phyllis) Schmitting, and John Schmitting.

The Christian Funeral Service for Lowell will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at RIVERVIEW EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 136 W. Seymour Street in Appleton, with Rev.
