Leona A. Brock

March 28, 1918 — November 29, 2007

Leona Brock was called home to Jesus early on Thursday, November 29, 2007. Leona was 89. She was born in Martin County, Minnesota on March 28, 1918, daughter of the late Henry and Alvina (Krueger) Nassen. After high school, she came to Appleton to attend business school, and lived here with her aunt and uncle. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Herbert Brock. The couple married in Appleton on June 6, 1943. The couple was blessed with fifty-four years together before Herb died in January of 1998. Leona was a longtime and faithful member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, and for several years worked with disabled children at the New Hope Nursery. Later, she helped to found the Community Day Care Center at First Congregational, and also worked there for about ten years.

Leona was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Arizona with Herb. She had many friends in the area, and always looked forward to the opportunities to entertain those friends in her home. Leona enjoyed playing bridge and sheepshead. Those who played cards with her will remember her sharp mind – an attribute that made her a fierce opponent at the card table!

She is survived by two loving sisters: Bernice Nolte of Fairmont, Minnesota and Verna Schlemme of Appleton; and by many nieces and nephews: Nancy (Ken) Mielke, Ronald (Marsha) Nolte, Patty Nolte, Debbie (Randy) Esch, Vicky (Harlowe) Rowe, Linda (Glen) Zimmerman, Mike (Beth McAuley) Schlemme, Roland (Nancy) Kippenhan, Greg (Marilyn) Kippenhan, Robert (Carleen) Brock, Betty Remter, Donald Brock, and Richard Brock. Leona was preceded in death by her husband Herb in 1998, two young daughters Sandra and Yvonne, a sister-in-law Elsie Kippenhan, brothers-in-law Ruben Nolte, Alvin Schlemme, Elmer Brock, and Edward Brock; and a niece, Linda Pike.

A memorial service to celebrate Leona’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 3, 2007 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UCC, 724 E. South River Street in Appleton with Rev. Jane Anderson officiating. Friends may gather at the church on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a memorial fund to benefit the Association of Retarded Citizens.
