Age 85, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at Appleton Medical Center. Lavern was born on August 1, 1918, in Birnamwood, Wisconsin, to the late Louis and Iva (Perschbacker) Bergner. He married Shirley C. Smith on June 28, 1942, in Appleton. Lavern served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed as a millwright at Kimberly Clark for over 43 years, retiring in 1980. Lavern enjoyed cribbage, hunting, golfing, and was an avid Cubs and Packer fan. With his wife Shirley, he wintered in Texas for 17 years. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shirley; his daughter, Sancee Joy (John) Riese, Appleton; his brother, Dale (Mary) Bergner, Appleton; his sisters-in-law, Mary Bergner, Menasha, and Rita Bergner, Appleton; his grandchildren, Christopher Riese, David Riese, Julie Riese and Jean Marie Stolzman; his 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores Gregorius and his brothers Milton and Marvin Bergner. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 500 West Marquette Street, Appleton, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.
