Age 81, passed away at Appleton Medical Center following a brief illness on Sunday, June 28, 2004. Juanita was born in Appleton on October 23, 1922, daughter of the late Seeley and Sylvia (Birk) Gurnee. On December 15, 1943 she married Joseph Portmann in Appleton. He preceded her in death in 1996. She lived in Appleton all of her life. Juanita was a faithful member of Congregational United Church of Christ. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother.

Juanita is survived by her daughter Kathy Portmann of Appleton; three brothers: Clarence (Beulah) Gurnee of Appleton, Franklin (Vi) Gurnee of Appleton and Charles (Beverly) Gurnee of Green Bay. Juanita is further survived by nieces and nephews.

Juanita is preceded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters: Eva Wincepaw, Sylvia Williams, Bertha Froehlich and Mary Bell Humphries; and a brother, David Gurnee.

The funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 North Superior Street, Appleton, with Rev. Jane Weeden officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the intensive care unit at Appleton Medical Center for their compassionate care and to Sue and Rick and Bobby Carlson for their time and support.

A memorial fund in Juanita’s name is being established for First Congregational United Church of Christ, Appleton.
