Age 88, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Rennes Health and Rehabilitation Center in Appleton, WI. She was born on August 10, 1920 in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Giuseppe “Joseph” A. and Christina M. (Cannata) Arrigo. On September 26, 1942 she married Aloysius “Al” A. Stanek who preceded her in death while serving in Europe during WWII on November 29, 1944. She married Aloysius' brother, Jerome “Jerry” F. Stanek on February 12, 1949. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1990. Jo was very patriotic and concerned that veteran's sacrifices of the “greatest generation” not be forgotten. She was known as “Mamma Jo” by the orphans of the American World War II Orphans Network, where she was a special mother for all WWII orphans who attended the conferences. Jo worked as a clerk for Switzer's, Burger's, Parkview Supermarket, all in Hammond, Indiana. She was particularly proud of her active volunteer work at Hospice, Northwest Indiana Chapter. Jo loved rummage sales and loved to volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul in Appleton. She will be remembered for her love of butterflies and flowers, especially peonies and roses.

Jo is survived by her son, David A. Stanek of Appleton. She is preceded in death by her brothers: Anthony “Tony” (Ann), Pete (Edith), Joseph “Joe” (Mary), and Frank (Mildred) Arrigo; sisters: Salvatora (Dora) (James “Jim”) Bennigo, Concetta “Connie” (Ignace “Iggie”) Augustine, Doninica “Marge” (Sam) Buono and Sarafine “Sophia” (Jack) Buono.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2009 at ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 570 Sibley St., Hammond, with Fr. Steve Kosinski officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL.

The family extends a special thank you to Fr. Gerald Falk, Sr. Betty and Sr. Mary Rose of St. Thomas More. Also, a warm thank you to Sr. Sue Dietz of Heart to Heart Care for her care and visits. Further, a very special thank you to Belinda in the activity center at Rennes for being a special friend, “Buds,” to Jo. Dave would like to thank Sheila Fenolio for her special efforts when Mom needed a woman's touch.
