I had the pleasure and honor of teaching Joe in six different undergraduate Radio TV Film courses. He was impressive in that he sustained high academic performance while tackling important leadership responsibilities in extracurricular activities. He was Executive Producer of Titan TV News (our weekly educational access channel newscast); another semester, he was Executive Producer/Writer on an ambitious narrative show, and he served as Video Production Coordinator for the annual telethon produced by our student chapter of the National Broadcast Society. He handled this workload with a positive spirit and a rare maturity. He was also graced with patience — a wonderful virtue in a stress-laden field such as ours. After weighing these many qualities, I selected Joe as a proctor (or teaching assistant) for the introductory film production course. He proved to be a superb choice, and used his patience and maturity to good advantage in helping students master the operation of several intimidating pieces of equipment. In scriptwriting, the thoughtful critiques Joe wrote of his classmates’ work were invaluable; it is no wonder that he later became a teacher. He was one of the few students to achieve the theoretical goal for critique writing: to encourage and support classmates in their work while simultaneously challenging them to do even better. Meanwhile, Joe’s own writing was outstanding: it came from the heart and it was fired by urgency. An extraordinary aspect of his screenplay was his creation of a complex, multi-dimensional protagonist who had built up a hardened shell of cynicism around her in response to childhood trauma. To have a male student create such an original and compelling female lead is rare, and it testified to his deep reserves of compassion and empathy. My heart goes out to Joe’s family. I know, without a doubt, he will be watching over them forever.
