Joan C. McCarty

Joan C. McCarty, age 77, passed away peacefully on September l7th, 2010. She was born in Neenah on October 20th, 1932 the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Freda (Krablean) Lewandowski. She was united in marriage to Charles R. McCarty at St. Mary's Church in Kaukauna on October 2nd, 1954; he preceded her in death on March 26, 1969. Joan was musically gifted, able to play the piano by ear. She was an outstanding athlete in high school, excelling in tennis. She passed her love of sports on to her children and grandchildren. After Joan's marriage, she gave up her career to devote her time and talents to her family. Joan enjoyed telling jokes, playing cards, knitting, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Joan took great pleasure in her grandchildren's sporting events, traveling all around the state to attend them.

Joan is survived by her children, Molly McCarty and her special friend Tom Eisen of Milwaukee; Matt (Linda) McCarty of Kimberly; Charlie (Lisa Pattee) McCarty of Plymouth, Minnesota; Megan (Dave) Van Lieshout of Wrightstown, and Cailin (William) Docter of Madison. Joan was the proud grandmother of thirteen grandchildren: Bob Van Deurzen, Amie Van Deurzen, Nichole (Brian) Mauthe, John Van Lieshout, Matt McCarty, Erin McCarty, Sean McCarty, Matthew (Erika) Wirta, Madeline McCarty, Nell McCarty, Jack McCarty, Sam Docter, Christian Docter and recently born great step-granddaughter Sophia Wirta. Joan is further survived by her brothers: Joseph (Joan) Lewandowski of Kaukauna and Scott Lewandowski of Fond du Lac; her sisters: Bonnie (Bill) Fisch Leonard of Appleton; Sue Niesen of Menasha; Mary (Dr. Jerrald) Heindel of Raleigh, North Carolina; Peg (Jerry) DeCoster of Little Chute; Jackie (Mike) Reardon of Kaukauna; and Debbie Brill of Kaukauna. Joan is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Jane Lewandowski of Menasha, Mary McInnis of Marion and Betty Swantes of Florida. She also leaves behind many terrific nieces and nephews especially her devoted niece Shannon (Gordy) Halsey and their daughter Breanna.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Joan was preceded in death by her infant twins, her brother John “Dan” Lewandowski, her brothers-in-law James Fisch, Tom Niesen, Tim (Pat) McCarty, and Dr. William McInnis; her mother and father-in-law: Gertrude and Raymond McCarty, along with numerous aunts and uncles.

The funeral liturgy for Joan will be held at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna, with Fr. Jim Vanden Hogen officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 2:00 PM until the service. Interment will take place privately in the parish cemetery on Wednesday morning.

It was Joan's special request to thank her brothers and sisters and their families who so unselfishly helped Joan throughout the years. A special thank you is extended to Jackie (Mike) Reardon, Peg (Jerry) DeCoster, Mary McInnis, Sue Niesen, and Debbie Brill.

Joan's family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice, especially Michael Vissers and Lisa Potter; Dr. Bruce Danz and his staff; the staff of Affinity Health System; Dr. F.X. Van Lieshout, Dr. Randy Kerswill and his staff; and Linda Lopez, Kimberly, who often visited mom. Joan's family is indebted to the dedicated and caring staff at Crestwood Senior Living (Sheelin House), especially Brenda Phelps, Julie Zarnoth, Tara Schaefer, Lindsay Miller and Dena Paulson, who allowed mom to live with dignity and pride.
