Age 81, passed away in Appleton after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Wednesday, August 14, 2002. James was born in Appleton on June 23, 1921, the son of the late William and Mary (Sloan) Agen. On June 16, 1945, James married Eileen B. Steele at St. Mary Catholic Church in Appleton. James served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He belonged to many organizations including American Legion Post #38, Knights of Columbus Branch 607, and was very active as a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. James spent many years as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office, N.A.L.C. Branch #822. Additionally, he worked at Hahn’s Bowling Lanes. Bowling was his passion. At home, James was especially known for his many hours working in the yard, expert grillsmanship, and excellent popcorn.

James is survived by his wife Eileen; four daughters: Karen (Ronald) Rademacher of Kimberly, Joyce (Dano) Jagielo of Neenah, Colleen (James) Recker of Appleton, and Jennifer Agen of Kimberly; four sons: Robert J. (Charlene) Agen of Appleton, Steven (Becky) Agen of Menasha, Lee (Kari) Agen of Appleton, James (Sue) Agen of Combined Locks; 14 grandchildren: Becky, John, Melissa, Scott (Stephanie), Mark, Renee (and fiancé Brian), Travis (Jenny), Kristen, Zachary, Katie, Joshua, Ashley, Kelsey, and Noah; and a great-grandchild, Madison. James is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

James is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, June Agen; and a brother, William (Jean) Agen.

The funeral liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2002, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 South State Street, Appleton, with Fr. Robert Lexa officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 18, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Friends will further be received at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the liturgy. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery.
