Age 66, died suddenly on Friday, March 23, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton. Jim was born on June 19, 1934, in Gillett, Wisconsin, to the late Dr. Alphonse W. and Clara (Melera) Koll. He graduated from Oshkosh high School in 1952 after attending Oshkosh Elementary Schools. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation from U. S. Army Intelligence School (1957) and Army Language School (1958, Monterey, California), he served in Germany. Following his honorable discharge in 1963, Jim was employed by the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Supply Officer. He continued with Civil Service in Mechanicsberg, Pennsylvania and Waukegan, Illinois, until his retirement in 1989. In retirement he enjoyed birdwatching, reading, walking, solving cross-word puzzles and writing his relatives and friends.

Survivors include his sister Lucille Benton, Appleton and Faith Kromrey, Minocqua; his brother, Donald W. (Elaine) Koll, Merrill; and his nieces and nephews, Dr. Thomas G. (Jill) Benton, Cambria, California; Joan (Dale) Hanson, Sanibel, Florida and Afton, Minnesota; George Jr. (Sandy) Kromrey, Sullivan, Missouri; Jean (Bill) Tehan, Wausau; Kay (Harvey) Garnett, Lakeville, Minnesota; Mark (Karen) Kromrey, Moose Pass, Alaska; Mary Jo (Jay III) Schnur, Merrill; John (Julie) Koll, Eau Claire. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Paul and his brothers-in-law, Dr. Jack R. Benton and George Kromrey.

The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 West Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. John P. Bergstadt officiating. Interment will be in St. Theresa Memorial Garden, Theresa, Wisconsin. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial has been established in his name. The family of Jim would like to thank all the staff of Alterra Wynwood for their loving care. The family is very grateful for the attention and care provided Jim by the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
