Appleton, Wisconsin

Age 65, completed his life’s journey on Saturday March 31, 2001 at his home surrounded by his family following a short battle with cancer. Jim was born on October 30, 1935 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin; the son of the late James Cowan and Dorothy F. Maxon. His family moved to Appleton in 1950. Jim graduated from Appleton West High School in 1954. He then served for four years in the U. S. Navy from 1954-1958, commissioned to the Forestall aircraft carrier. On September 19, 1959, Jim married the former Carole V. Brill at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton. He was a parish member of Sacred Heart, Appleton all of his married life. Jim was employed at James River for 37 years until his retirement in October, 1997. He was a Junior bowling coach at Sabre Lanes for many years. Jim enjoyed bowling and was an avid cribbage player. He also enjoyed vacationing with his family, friends and relatives at his vacation home in Wabeno, Wisconsin. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, and love for his family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Carole; his five children; Mary Sue (Bill) Manci, Appleton; Carrie (Chris) Paine, Appleton; Kelly (Mark) Phillips, Appleton; Gary (Jessica) Cowan, Darboy; Lynne (Jay) Heinzelman, Evansville, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Kristine, John and Michael Manci; Bryan and Boyce Paine; Jacob Phillips; Kayla and Courtney Cowan; and Charles Heinzelman; three sisters, Mary (Gary) Graper, Madison, Wisconsin; Joan (John) Craine, Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin; Linda Kucharas, Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin; a step-mother, Betty Paradowski, Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, Dee Christensen, Hortonville. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends further survive him.
Preceding hi in death were his parents, James Cowan and Dorothy F. Maxon; his mother and father-in-law, Jerome and Eleanor Brill; his stepfather, Lowell Maxon, and his infant grandson, Mark Manci.

The Funeral Liturgy will be 11:00 AM Wednesday April 4, 2001 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 East Fremont Street, Appleton with Fr. Robert Karuhn officiating. Visitation and viewing will be Tuesday, April 3, 2001 from 4:00 PM until the Prayer Service at 7:30 PM at the FUNERAL HOME and again on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until 10:30AM at which time the cortege will leave for the CHURCH.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
