Irving G. Curry, III

July 16, 1933 — April 8, 2008

Irving G. Curry III, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. Irv was born in Horicon, Wisconsin, on July 16, 1933, son of the late Irving and Emma (Zimmerman) Curry II. On July 10, 1955, he married the former Susan Reible in Horicon, and from 1958 until 1961 served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, Judge Advocate General Corps. Irv enjoyed spending time with his family at the cottage on Velvet Lake in Rhinelander sailing, pontooning, and watching the loons. An avid reader, Irv spent time on his deck, usually working on a good mystery novel.

Irv loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and they will treasure their memories of him. Grandma and Grandpa could be counted on to be in the crowd at any dance recital, concert, or sporting event. He was with his children and grandchildren as much as possible. Irv and Sue always looked forward to their annual visit to Naples, Florida where they spent time with family and friends. At the time of his death, Irv was close to completing a treasury of family memories. He will also be remembered by all as a wonderful storyteller, always having the knack for making people laugh.

Irv was a 1955 graduate of Lawrence University and also graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1958 (“Hail to the Victors!”). In 1961, Neil McCarty recognized the need for an experienced litigator, and hired Irv. Irv was responsible for all litigation and became the firm's managing partner, providing leadership to the business operations of the firm. He was instrumental in developing a true partnership that was known for many years as McCarty, Curry, Wydeven, Peeters & Haak. The firm is now known as McCarty Law, LLP.

Irv was a member of the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Association, a 50-year member of the Wisconsin Bar Association, and the Outagamie County Bar Association, which he once served as president. Irv served on the board of directors for Kaukauna Community Hospital, Peabody Manor, Kaukauna Industrial Park Commission, United Way, Inc., Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region (where he was elected a Member), and Keller Structures (thirty years). He was a founding member of PECIS, member of Kaukauna Kiwanis and had served as its president and District Lieutenant Governor, and was a member of King's Daughters and Sons. Irv taught law office management for many years at the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Over the years, Irv was an active and faithful member of Peace United Methodist Church in Kaukauna. His involvement there ranged from busing tables after church dinners to chairing the building committee.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years: Susan Curry of Kaukauna; two children: Gregg (Mary Clare) Curry of Sherwood and their sons Mike, Tom, and Steve; and Ann (Dave) Harris of Kaukauna and their daughters Emma and Katie; a brother: Bud (Margaret “Magee”) Curry of Arizona; two sisters-in-law: Muriel Curry of Madison and Marilyn “Queenie” (Lynn “Buck”) Spittel of Horicon. Irv is also survived by his longtime friend and associate: Dennis and Suzie Wydeven and their family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Curry, and by Susan's parents, Leon and Alvina (Hoeppner) Reible.

Funeral services for Irv will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at PEACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 2300 Wisconsin Avenue in Kaukauna with Rev. Tim Albrecht officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. Memorial funds are being established at Peace United Methodist Church and the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region.

Irv will forever be remembered as a generous and loving man who was always willing to give back to others. Even in death, his final wishes were to donate tissue to those in medical need.
