Hilma Winter

Hilma Winter, 99, died Friday, May 27, 2011 at Theda Clark Medical Center.

She was born on May 14, 1912 in the Town of Fox Lake, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gustav and Hulda (Schultz) Grahn. Hilma graduated from Fox Lake High School, from Dodge County Normal School and taught grade school in the Towns of Fox Lake and Juneau, Wisconsin. She married Alvin “Ivy” Winter on July 6, 1933 and they farmed near Fremont until moving to Weyauwega in 1946. While living in Weyauwega she also taught at St. Peter's Lutheran school and in the public school. In 1952 Hilma and Ivy moved to Appleton where she was later employed at AAL for over 13 years. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Alvin, a daughter Natalie Gleffe; a daughter-in-law, Mary Winter; sisters Clara and Dora; sister and brother-in-law Mildred and William Tonn; brothers and sisters-in-law Walter and Myrtle Grahn; Elmer and Anna Grahn; and Wilbert and Angie Grahn.

She is survived by her son Warren of Butte des Morts, son-in-law, Robert Gleffe, Woodruff, five grandchildren; Marsha Phillips of Butte des Morts; Deborah (Richard) Paalman of Appleton; Melissa (Jeff) Makovec of Dixon, Illinois; Michael Winter of Butte des More; and Robert W. (Kendra) Gleffe of Woodruff; and four great-grandchildren, Clifford Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Emily Makovec, and Logan Gleffe. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Esther Stryzewski and Marie Misterek of Oshkosh and many nieces and nephews.

Hilma was very religious and was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church since moving to Appleton in 1952. She had also been active with the Fox Valley Lutheran High School Guild for many years.

The funeral service for Hilma will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at BETHANY EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH (530 West Parkway Blvd, Appleton) with Rev. Mark Henke officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the church. Interment will be in the Highland Memorial Park.
