Hilkka was a wonderful lady and mother. I knew Hilkka because she was the mother of Columbus, who resided at the group home where I work. It was easy to see the tremendous love they had for each other and I'm happy they will be together again. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time.

Hilkka was a proud Finnish chemist, language translator, and skilled electron microscopist who worked many years at The Institute of Paper Chemistry while it was located in Appleton. She provided highly skilled assistance to IPC staff, students, and many pulp & paper and related companies in the U.S. Hilkka learned and mastered scientific skills required for both transmission and scanning electron microscopy, as well as applications in energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. She was a invaluable asset within The Institute and to students at nearby Lawrence University.

Hilkka was a good friend of my mother, Shirley Verhagen. They worked together at the IPC for many years. Happily, they were able to see each other again just recently when my mother and other friends from IPC came to visit Hilkka. We all send our condolences.
