Henry J. Meyer

September 5, 1918 — February 17, 2016

Henry J. Meyer of Appleton, WI passed away quietly at his home on February 17th, 2016 with his wife at his side. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 5th, 1918 to John and Josephine (Meyer) Waclawski. He attended school in Milwaukee and training at Camp Grant. Following Officer Candidate School in Pennsylvania, he was assigned to the 80th Division. He was on a ship in Boston Harbor awaiting departure for Europe on D-Day. The 80th Division was to have the most combat days of any division in Europe. He completed his service in the Army in December 1945 with the rank of Major. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement on May 13th, 1953.
Following his time in the Army, he returned to Milwaukee and attended Marquette University earning a degree in business in just three years. He then went to the University of Pittsburgh for a Masters Degree in Business Management.
In 1951 he began a 32 year career with the H.C. Prange Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where he was the Operations Manager. Also in 1951, on July 14th, he was married to Marian Frazee at Trinity Lutheran Church in Connellsville, PA.
In Sheboygan, much of his community service was related to his management career at Prange Co. He served on many committees for the Chamber of Commerce. Henry was also a member of the Lions Club and served as President. Additionally, he served the Sheboygan Area Girl Scout Council on the Camp Evelyn Camp Committee during the time the dining hall and swimming pool were constructed. He was also a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council.
In 1986 he and Marian retired to Green Valley, Arizona. He took up a new hobby of woodworking. His original designs were so creative that he sold them at craft shows twice a year. Many of his items featured turquoise inlay.
During their 19 years in Green Valley, Henry served 3 terms on the Green Valley Recreation Board, as both Treasurer and President. The Greater Green Valley Foundation Board of Directors and the Woodworkers Board helped fill out his time in retirement. He and Marian were also members of Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Green Valley and after coming to Appleton, became members of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Henry was an avid runner. He began running when he was 50 and ran approximately 1500 miles a year. He completed 15 marathons including the Boston Marathon twice. He often shared great memories of the time with his running buddies Reynolds, Chuck, and Carl.
Throughout these numerous and varied life experiences, Henry consistently displayed a strong work ethic and determination. As he spent the last months of his life, he was also an amazing model of dignity, compassion, and graciousness. His positive outlook and gratitude to others was unwavering. Henry will be greatly missed as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Meyer, sons James in New York City, Clark (Sara) in Appleton and a daughter, Catherine (David) Cox in San Francisco, CA, grandchildren Thomas, Nicole, Jacob, and Kellan Meyer as well as Emily Cox. He is also survived by sister Alyce Gunkel and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Steve, sister-in-law Hattie, niece Jorlyce Wange and grand-daugher Monica Meyer.
