Helen L. Strobl

April 23, 1917 — October 2, 2010

Helen Strobl, age 93, and resident of The Heritage, Appleon, passed away Saturday evening, October 2, 2010. Helen was born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 23, 1917, daughter of the late Aloysius and Permelia (Apple) Berger. On May 5, 1939, she married Frederick Paul Strobl and they celebrated sixty wonderful years together. Helen was a long time resident of Park Ridge, Illinois, and moved to Cary, Illinois, upon her husband's retirement. Helen spent her life being the selfless, behind the scenes mother supporting her husband's career and raising their children. For years she was a dedicated volunteer at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Helen especially enjoyed painting, knitting, music and traveled to Europe many times.

At the time of Fred's death in 1999, Helen moved to The Heritage, Appleton, to be near her daughter. Helen's positive, outgoing personality was welcomed by her many new friends at The Heritage. Playing bridge was her favorite pastime. She was honored and felt privileged to speak at the 2003 annual Women's Fund Luncheon being a part of the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc. Although she supported the Packers she secretly watched the Chicago Bears score when no one was looking. Helen loved her family, friends, and felt she had a beautiful life.

She is survived by a daughter, Barb (Chuck) Merry, Appleton, son Fred Jr. Oakwood Hills, Illinois, and grandchildren Kristin (Sean) Von Manowski, Denver, Colorado, David and special friend Missy Simpson, Boulder Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred, two brothers, and three sisters.

A private celebration of Helen's life will be held at The Heritage at a later date. Memorials can be directed to the Helen Strobl Fund at the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley, Inc.
