Harmon M. Gast

November 7, 1924 — October 13, 2010

Harmon Gast, age 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the Appleton Medical Center. Harmon was born at home in Birnamwood on November 7, 1924, son of the late Gustav and Ida (Heiman) Gast. Harmon was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Birnamwood, and graduated from the Mattoon High School. On September 30, 1950 he married the former Carla Brumm. The couple farmed in the town of Aniwa for sixteen years before moving to Appleton. Harmon began work at Glatfelter Paper in Neenah, and worked there as a paper inspector for twenty-four years. He will be remembered for his love of gardening and sharing his produce with family and friends, for the beautiful roses he cultivated, and for his love of polka music. In fact, it was Harmon who introduced the Polka Service to the members of Faith Lutheran Church in Appleton.

Harmon is survived by his wife of sixty years: Carla Gast of Greenville; a son: Randy (Linda) Gast of Bronx, New York; four grandchildren: Tim (Holly) Gast of Port Washington; Katie (Joe) DiBasilio of Bel Air, Maryland; Joel Gast of Baltimore; and Sara Gast of Baltimore; a brother: Wally Gast of Wittenberg; two sisters: Norma Krull of Wittenberg and Alinda Gilray of Schofield; a sister-in-law: Adele Gast of Shawano; two brothers-in-law: Lyle (Dawn) Brumm of New London and Bob (Barbara) Brumm of Green Bay; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Harmon was preceded in death by his parents, by Carla's parents, brothers: Harvey (Lorena), Harold, Arnie (Ardis), and Marvin (Geneva) (Lorraine); brothers-in-law: Herbert Krull and Oliver Gilray; and a sister-in-law: Margaret Gast.

The Christian Funeral for Harmon will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Avenue in Appleton, with Rev. Daniel Thews and Rev. James Wiebel officiating. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano County. The family will receive relatives and friends directly at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the services. A memorial fund in Harmon's name is being established at Faith Lutheran Church.

The family would like to offer their thanks to the many friends, family members, helpers, and caregivers who gave so generously of their time, talent, thoughts, and prayers. We are deeply grateful for all you have done.

Harmon will be remembered as a Christian man who loved his Lord, and who shared his faith and that love with his family. He was also proud to know that his son and daughter-in-law and their four children also share those same Christian beliefs and ideals.
