Gordon E. Brown

Gordon Eige Brown, 63, died unexpectedly at his home in Menasha, Wisconsin, Friday morning, June 4, 2010. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on July 27, 1946, son of the late Gilbert and Maxine Eige Brown. He was a 1964 graduate of Marshalltown High School and received his bachelor's degree from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, in 1968.

On August 24, 1968 he married fellow Simpson student Christine James in her hometown of Auburn, Maine. While at Simpson, Gordon began his career in higher education as writer, editor, and publisher, moving from editor of the student newspaper to become a member of the college's professional staff following graduation. He continued in his profession for nearly forty years at schools including Simpson and Grinnell Colleges in Iowa, Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, and Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

An avid reader and amateur photographer, Gordon also served as a docent for the Experimental Aircraft Association at its museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was active in the Episcopal Church at both parish and diocesan levels for almost forty years and at the time of his death, was editor of the Clarion, the monthly newspaper of the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac. In recent years he also served on the advisory board of the Hands of Christ Deaf Ministry. His last act of service was to donate his body to the University of Wisconsin at Madison Medical School.

Gordon is survived by his wife: Christine of Menasha; a daughter: Lyndsey of Nazareth, Pennsylvania; a son: Matthew; a sister: JoAnne Campney of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother and sister-in-law: Paul and Sue Brown of Dover, Delaware; a sister-in-law: Kathleen Disney of St. Petersburg, Florida and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Verena and Lincoln Hawkes of Fairbanks, Alaska. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother-in-law: the Rev. Arthur B. Campney.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 100 N. Drew Street, Appleton, WI, with Fr. Patrick Twomey officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends in the church hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wisconsin Parkinson Association.
