Gordon B. Sommer

March 30, 1925 — October 20, 2015

Gordon Sommer, age 90 of Appleton, passed away at Rennes Health in Appleton early on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2015. Gordy was born in Appleton on March 30, 1925, son of the late William and Erna (Mueller) Sommer. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School, and Appleton High School. At the age of eighteen, Gordy lost his mother, and his dad later married his step-mother, Dorothy. On June 2, 1951, he married the former Lois Vogt at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Appleton. Together, the couple celebrated 64 wonderful years together. Gordy will be fondly remembered by the Courtney family and countless others for his dedicated fifty-eight years of employment. And all fifty-eight years without a sick day! He was a longtime and faithful member of Peace Lutheran Church in Neenah, sang in the church choir as well as the MacDowell Male Chorus, was a member of the Golden K Club, and served in the National Guard. Everyone, of course, remembers Gordy for his keen eye and great calls as an umpire. He officiated games at all levels, both softball and baseball. In his career, he worked over 6, 000 games.

Gordy is survived by his wife: Lois Sommer of Appleton; three children: Susan (James) Gloudemans of Appleton; Thomas (Jennifer) Sommer of Neenah; and William (Judi) Sommer of Appleton; ten grandchildren: Todd Gloudemans, Paul (Natalie) Gloudemans, Melissa (Luke) Diedrich, Adam (Emily) Sommer, Nicholas Sommer and his fiancée Holly, Eric Sommer and his friend Lacy, Matthew Sommer, Timothy Sommer, Jacob Sommer, and Abigail Sommer. Gordy's great-grandchildren are Grace, Benjamin, Nathan, Paige, Ian, and Wyatt. He also leaves behind a sister-in-law: Constance Sommer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, and brothers Harland and Norman Sommer.
