Frances M. Schaefer

Frances Schaefer, age 90, passed away at home on May 4, 2011. Frances was born in Kaukauna on December 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Edwin and Rose (Hartmanstorfer) Walker. Frances graduated from the Kaukauna High School and continued her education at Kaukauna Normal Teachers' College, and received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Oshkosh State College. Later she received her Master's Degree in reading from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. Frances taught at Holy Cross School in Kaukauna, St. John's School in Little Chute, and Holy Name School in Kimberly. She retired in 1986. Frances was married to Linus Schaefer for sixty-two years prior to his death in 2002.

Frances loved life! In her younger years, Frances was quite the athlete, and enjoyed swimming, bowling, and even hunting. When her family was young, they enjoyed camping and traveling together. She loved reading, gardening, and canning each year's harvest. Most of all, Frances enjoyed doting on her grandchildren.

The couple had four children: Edwin (Jeanne) Schaefer of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas; Terrance Schaefer (Nancy Webster) of Green Bay; Nancy Schaefer of Kaukauna; and Lei Ann Lewis (John Jost) of Hilbert. There are eight grandchildren: Chad (Eileen) Schaefer, Nicole (Scott) Heider, Heather Collette – VanDeraa, Patrick Schaefer – Wicke, Mark (Sonya) Schaefer, and Matthew (Shoko) Wicke, Maria (John) Duemler, and Bret (Amber) Lewis; three great-grandsons: Ricky Gasman, Paul Schaefer, and Kyle Schaefer; three great-granddaughters: Kotomi Wicke, Chiyomi Wicke, and Gabriella Duemler. She is also survived by a sister: LaVerne Van Vreede; a sister-in-law: Helen Walker; and a brother-in-law: Clayton Vanden Broek. Frances also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Linus, her parents Edwin and Rose Walker, a sister Marie (Joe) Simon, brothers Robert (Imelda) Walker and Edwin “Don” Walker, and a brother-in-law: Jerome Van Vreede.

The funeral liturgy for Frances will be held at 12:15 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at HOLY CROSS CATOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again at the church on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
