Age 88, passed away at home surrounded by love and many Hail Marys on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Evelyn was born in Little Chute on July 15, 1922 the daughter of the late Joseph and Nell (DeBruin) Kobussen. On May 11, 1946 she married her husband of 56 years, Joseph “Sam” Merkes, in Little Chute. Mom was very loving and kind. She had a classic, elegant style. Mom loved to play cards and was a master sheephead player.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Patricia Merkes of Appleton, Kay “Sissy” (Anthony) Theisen of Fremont, Margaret “Maggie” Senger of Rimrock, AZ; five grandchildren: Nathaniel, Kristin, Lindy, Michelle and Geoffrey; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Sandra Lindsey; daughter-in- law, Cheryl Merkes; and honorary brother, George Diehl. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; son, Michael Merkes; sister, Eva Janssen; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Tiede.

The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
