Ernyl O. Westphal

Ernyl O. “Ernie” Westphal, age 86, of Menasha passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton. He was born on February 20, 1923 in Arco, MN; son of the late Ernest and Helen (Tople) Westphal. Ernie attended grade and high school in Arco, MN graduating in 1939. He was employed by Lever Brothers Co. in junior sales when he volunteered to serve his country with the U.S. Army. Ernie served 33 months in the infantry with 4 campaigns in the ETO including the Battle of the Bulge and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Ernie attended Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D. On September 17, 1949 in Arco, MN, he was united in marriage to Marian Sabrowski. They moved to Menasha where Ernie worked for 37 years for Gilbert Paper Co. retiring in 1988. Ernie spent 21 years enjoying his retirement. He was proud of his family, enjoyed playing golf with his friends and was a member of the Neenah Club. Ernie is survived by his wife, Marian (Sabrowski) Westphal, Menasha; daughter, Heather (Jack) Scheffler, Appleton; son, Paul Westphal, Costa Mesa, CA; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Amy) Scheffler, Neenah, Jonathan Scheffler, Menasha and Jodi Lee (Tom) Kilsdonk, Appleton; great-grandchildren, Emily and Jace Scheffler, Forrest Scheffler and Karley, Camie and Hannah Kilsdonk; niece, Pat (Bob) Julius; nephews, Kurt Speidel, Christian (Robyn) Speidel and Bradley Westphal; nephew-in-law, Dan Nadolney; brother-in-law, Eric Kitzman; sister-in-law, Phyllis (Martin) Speidel; friends of the “Old Geezer's Golf League and his buddies at the Neenah Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, David Westphal, sisters-in-law, Audrey Westphal, Lois Kitzman and Dorothy Sabrowski and brother-in-law, John Sabrowski and niece, Sue Nadolney and cousin Roger Westphal. A Celebration of Ernie's Life will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at ST. TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 437 7th St., Menasha with the Rev. David Skarsten officiating. Family and friends may visit at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Inurnment will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Neenah. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in his name.
