Elsie E. Simmons

Elsie E. Simmons, age 72, of Appleton, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 22, 2016. Elsie was born on February 18, 1944, in Freedom, on the diary farm of her late parents, Alfred and Berdine (Brown) Springstroh. She married Merle L. Simmons on June 19, 1965, in Freedom. Elsie was a 1962 graduate of Freedom High School. It was Elsie's nature to help everyone. She regularly made donations at the Community Blood Center and was a long-time member of the Dorcas Society at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, playing sheepshead, crocheting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, horseback riding, driving and joking with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Merle; her four daughters, Lory (Mark) Steinberg; Cheri Blackwell; Brenda (Ed) Fisher; and Barbara Simmons; her six grandchildren, Josh (Jenny) Carriveau; Jason (Katrina) Blackwell, Jacob Fisher, Natalie Fisher, Lauren Keenan and Amber Keenan; her three great grandchildren, Anthony (fiancé Elizabeth) Carriveau, Ryan Carriveau, and Morgan Carriveau. Her twin great-great grandsons are expected in August. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Val Simmons-Schuler, Frances Mills, Audrey (Robert) Arlen, Phyllis Springstroh; her brother-in-law, Richard Meyer; and her truly treasured friend, Joyce Wichman. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Elsie was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Springstroh; her sister-in-law, Marie Meyer; and her brothers-in-law, George Simmons and Gary Mills.
Funeral services for Elsie will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at ST. MATTHEW EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 129 S. Mason Street, Appleton, with Rev. Thomas Mielke officiating. Friends may call directly to the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Community Lutheran Cemetery, Freedom. A memorial has been established in Elsie's name. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Appleton Police Department and the staff at Gold Cross Ambulance, for their loving care.
