Betty Larson, age 86, died on July 11, 2011. Betty was born on October 9, 1924, in Menominee, Michigan, to the late Arthur and Rose (Kristof) Larson. Betty's family moved to Door County where she attended elementary school in what is now the Pioneer School Museum. In 1938 the family moved to Appleton, where Betty attended the eighth grade at St. Mary School. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1942, and in 1945 graduated from Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. Following several years as Head Nurse at Michael Reese Hospital, she enrolled in the graduate nurse program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Betty earned both a Bachelor and a Masters degree at Case Western Reserve University. After working as an instructor at schools of nursing in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana, she returned to Appleton to accept a position at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where she was one of five faculty members that developed the curriculum of the new baccalaureate nursing program at the university. Betty was awarded the university's Outstanding Teacher Award in 1984 and the Appleton District Nurses Association's award as Outstanding Nurse Educator in 1985. She retired from UW-O as an Associate Professor in 1991. Betty enjoyed golfing with her friends in the Winnagamie Foxy Ladies Golf League. Betty is survived by her two nephews, Michael (Mary Kay) Larson, Madison and James Larson, Texas, a niece, Sharon Johnson, Texas; four great nieces, Lindy Larson, Karen Bowers, Katie (Mike) Crivello, Chris (Bill) Reukauf; and five great nephews, Mark Bowers, Mitchell and Greg Larson, and John, Eric and David White. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Marcella Larson, Madison. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred; her brothers, Robert and James; her niece, Beverly Larson, her friend Lois Crabb and her friend Sue Mayes. Betty was blessed to have very special friends who were also family: Barb and Jim Goehler, Appleton; Suzanne and Jack Harness, Neenah; Andrea, Wayne, Lauren and Grant Heiman, Bailey's Harbor; Bryan, Kristen, Andrew and Anika Goehler, Minnesota; Adam and Sarah (Goehler) Clark, Sherwood; Gary and Sue Davies and family, Oshkosh. There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 S. State Street, Appleton, with Fr. David Funk, O. F. M. officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary Catholic Church, Appleton, Covenant House in New York City or Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) College of Nursing Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
